Munich 1972 Summer Olympics
Aquatic Events

Events at the aquatic center begin soon after the opening ceremony and precede the track and field events.

Swimming has been seen by many to be the second most imiportant event, after track and field,in the modern Olympic Games since its inclusion in 1896.

The aquatic center is not only home to the various swimming styles,it also hosts diving, synchronized swimming and water polo events.

The Chinese often dominate the tower and springboard diving events, while they also perform to word standard in the women's swimming events.

The various aquatic events provide a sensational visual spectacle and this explains why these events are among the most popular and highly broadcast of all the Olmpic events.
Diving requires skillful take offs, followed by forward or backward somersaults and twists in straight, pike or tuck psitions and then,if all goes well,a clean entry.

The swimming races from a single lap in the 50M sprint events throgh to 30 laps for the 1500M event.

Freestyle, the fastest stroke,is swum in a face down position with arms aslternately circling beside the body.
The butterfly stroke is similar to freestyle except that the arms circle together symmetrically and hence the body movement is more dolphin like.

Back stroke is practically freestyle lying on your back in the water.
The only event where the hands are not permitted to leave the water is the breaststroke. The breaststroke is symmetrical like the butterfly stroke but the angle of the stroke is flatter. It is the simplest stroke to learn but the slowest.
Swimming races require advanced timing devices to ensure the correct placing is given to the athlete and so that records can be accurately verified.

Touch sensitive pads are positioned on the wall at the end of every lane to detect exactly when the swimmer touches in.
Sensors are also used on the starting platforms to monitor false starts and correct relay changeovers.
Video technology is also being used more and more in an effort to monitor and regulate illegal techniques.
Such illegalities may occur in breaststroke and underwater dolpining that may exceed allowable lengths.
