Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics
Stadiums

Stadiums, or stadia as they are also called, are large constructions designed for event activities and seating for thousands of spectators.
The Homebush Stadium in Sydney is one of the best and biggest in the world. It was built for the 2000 Olylmpic Games and has seating for 110,000 spectators.

Stadiums can also be run as profitable business. They can get revenue from ticket sales and even from sponsorships.
For example, the Homebush Stadium is now called the Telstra stadium, after sponsorship from Australia's largest telecom company.
However, to make money, stadiums must be flexible for the hosting of different types of sporting events as well as concerts.

Also the facilities must allow the spectators to view the events in comfort. For these reasons, stadium design is crucial.
Stadiums need to have grandstands with several decks or tiers to provide seating for the many spectators.

Seats should have a tip-up feature to allow easy walking along rows.

Aisles should be wide enough so that people can exit the area quickly in the case of an emergency.
The roof shoule provide shelter from sun and rain for most of the spectators. In some cases a translucent roof can be opened and closed to provide full weather protection.
Having ramps, elevators, special seating and toilet facilities should also provide access for disabled people in wheelchairs.

Crowds can get hungry and thirsty so canteens should be positoned around the stadium.

Another feature that cannot be overlooked is the scoreboard. Usually there is one at each end of a stadium with a large TV screen.
Media facilities are also very important so a press box near the finish line must be available. These are just a few of the thousands of considerations stadia designers must plan for.
In some ways a stadium is like a small city when an event is running. it is crucial that the venue is designed well and that the staff are aware of all safegy procedures.
It is also crucial for stadium owners that athletes, officials, workers, and spectators can play their parts without undue difficulties. If they fail in this regard, then a great business opportunity is wasted. That would be a loss for all involved.
The Beijing Olympic Stadium, designed by Swiss architects is touted as being one of the world's best stadia. It will hold 100,000spectators and is said to resemble a giant bird's nest.
